Description
Artist Bernard Garo has created an original artwork for the label of our Dézaley Grand Cru Haut de Pierre 2021
The 2021 vintage was a year of unprecedented challenges for winegrowers. Severe frost, heavy rainfall and hail significantly impacted harvests, particularly in Lavaux. In Epesses, our organically farmed estate had to contend not only with downy mildew but also with the collapse of a stone wall in the Dézaley vineyards. While yields were exceptionally low, the quality of the grapes proved outstanding.
We therefore decided to devote special attention to our Dézaley Haut de Pierre, allowing it to mature for twice as long as usual. Bottled only in spring 2023, a full eighteen months after the 2021 harvest, the resulting wine is both remarkable and exceptionally rare: only 600 bottles of Dézaley Grand Cru Haut de Pierre, the flagship wine of the estate, were produced instead of the usual 4,000.
To showcase this rare wine, a true survivor of the climatic challenges it endured, we commissioned Bernard Garo. The Nyon-based artist, painter, visual artist and photographer, has dedicated much of his work to social and, above all, environmental issues. While one crafts wine with nature, the other creates art through that same nature. Bernard Garo has produced an exclusive artwork specially designed for the label of our Dézaley Grand Cru Haut de Pierre 2021.
To celebrate this artistic and viticultural collaboration, the estate offers the wine for sale individually or in wooden presentation cases containing three or six bottles of Dézaley Grand Cru AOC – Haut de Pierre 2021. The cases may also be accompanied by limited-edition reproductions of the artwork, printed on Japanese Awagami Shiramine paper.
Tasting Notes
Upon opening, the wine displays subtle oxidative notes that gradually fade as it breathes. On the palate, it reveals the classic hallmarks of a Dézaley. The bouquet offers aromas of honey and almond, supported by a delicate yet distinct minerality. A pleasant saline note lingers on the finish, adding freshness and complexity.
Vinification
After pressing and settling, the must from the Dézaley Haut de Pierre was transferred into 300-litre oak barrels that had been used for six years.
Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations took place in barrel, without bâtonnage. The wine was racked twice before being bottled 18 months later.
